Guidance and Counselling: Nurturing Minds, Fostering Hope

At Friends School Kamusinga, the Guidance and Counselling Department plays a pivotal role in providing support, guidance, and mentorship to students, helping them navigate the complexities of adolescence and academic life. With a focus on repairing and restoring broken lives through hope, the department is committed to addressing various challenges faced by learners and empowering them to achieve personal and academic success.

Key Functions and Services:

1. Supporting Smooth Transitions:

The department assists new students and Form One students in transitioning smoothly and acclimatizing to school life, ensuring they feel welcomed, supported, and valued from the outset.

2. Addressing Serious Issues:

Some students face significant challenges that negatively impact their academic performance and daily lives. These include spiritual problems like cultism, peer pressure related to relationships, drugs, and identity crisis, family challenges such as parental absence or violence, social media influence, homesickness, health issues, academic pressure, bereavement, among others.

3. Peer Counselling:

In addition to teacher counsellors, the department utilizes peer counsellors who work collaboratively with students to provide support and guidance. Peer counsellors engage in daily counselling sessions with their classmates, with dedicated time allocated for full-class counselling sessions every Sunday from 8pm to 9pm.

4. Family Mentorship:

The department forms families or groups of students and assigns specific teachers for mentorship from Form 1 to Form 4. Teachers meet with their assigned families on specific days, providing mentorship, guidance, and support tailored to the needs of each student.

5. External Speakers and Workshops:

External speakers are regularly invited to address students on specific areas of concern, providing valuable insights and guidance on various issues affecting adolescent life and academic performance.

The department acknowledges and appreciates the high level of discipline among students and their positive attitude towards seeking guidance and support. This collaborative approach fosters a supportive and nurturing environment where students feel empowered to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
